Nature (back)
The Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is an 11,000 acre living aviary. A boardwalks twists and turns 2.25 miles throughout the 500 year old cypress swamp and forested preserve. The sanctuary has the largest collection of ancient Bald Cypress in North America. These impressive trees are relatives of the Redwood and tower 130 feet into the sky and have a girth of 25 feet. Their massive branches are draped with mosses, lichens, air plants, orchids, and ferns.
An approximate two hour tour will offer views of almost 200 bird species including: Hawks, Owls, Ibis, Heron, Limpkin, Anhinga, Black Throated Green Warblers, and Yellow-Billed Cuckoo's. Corkscrew supports the largest colony of Wood Storks in the United States.
The forest is also the home to hundreds of Alligators, White-Tailed Deer, Otters, Florida Black Bears and Red Bellied Turtles. They are located 15 miles east of I-75.
